The Homestead

My family and I live on an acre of property in the middle of the desert.  We have 2 goats, 2 dogs, 16 chickens, a traditional garden about the size of the garden my grandma had in Colorado, and a container garden.  This year we're going to can or dry as much as we possibly can.

We have started seeds in the house, 3 different types of tomatos, 2 different types of sweet peppers, 2 different kinds of hot peppers, we are planting corn, both pole beans and bush beans, winter squash, yellow crook neck squash, zucchini, cucumbers for salad and pickling, and luffa.  We also have some blackberry plants, and we are planting raspberries,we currently have 3 apple trees and plan on a couple of more, and will continue developing our small property to feed our family.  Lastly we also have 3 grape plants and are adding more.

Now why am I explaining all this you ask?  My goal if we stay on this property is to expand the gardens, the number of fruit trees and bushes and animals to the point that we get most of our food from our own hands and have little to no reliance on stores.  Again, why you ask?  In answer I will say I'm like a boy scout and I believe in always being prepared.  This means having some food stored in case I can't afford to buy food, and knowing how to feed myself and my family without stores and through hunting and foraging.

You see I believe our economy is currently in a long slow slide and eventually we are going to see hyper-inflation.  The barter economy is there, but not for food and staples.  I could be completely wrong about this and I am fully aware and agree that God is in control of history.  I also know that He instructed Joseph to put back for seven years of famine.

My suggestion, to you:  Pray about what you should do and if you feel led to put back some food then do so.

Just my rambling of the day.
